Rebecca Blakely
The Hlobe
Come one, come all, to see the world-renowned Hlobe! It will make your world go round! Now that we’ve gotten the puns out of the way, here is an overview of Rebecca Blakely’s Symposium experience! David Hockney, a modern-day Pop Art artist, has been of great artistic inspiration to me since sophomore year, so it was not a surprise that I chose him as my Symposium artist. Over the course of a few months, I mimicked the patterns and colors that he uses in his artwork to create what I have decided to call the Hlobe, or Hockney-Globe, for my Symposium project. David Hockney is an artist who paints -- for the most part -- scenic paintings, so that is partially what led me to paint on a globe, as it is a gigantic overview of all of the tiny scenic details that exist in the world. Also, as someone who fancies all things 3D, I thought that it would be a unique idea to tackle painting on a globe, so that is exactly what I did. As a disclaimer, this globe is not at all geographically accurate, and is not meant to be of offense to anyone. It is a lot harder of a task than I expected to paint a globe by hand in the matter of a few short months, so I tried my best to include some fun designs and little doodles here and there in the time that I had, while also sticking to the style of my artist. I hope you enjoy, and that you are CONTinENT with how my project turned out!
