Mount Alvernia High School, Newton, Massachusetts

As a conclusion to my four years in art at Mount Alvernia, I chose to create a picture using pastels as my senior art thesis. In the collection of works by Georgia O’Keeffe called The New York Years, she has created an oil painting of colorful vegetables. I then recreated it in pastels, combining various bright colors and adding a halo effect to the top, which allows the colors of the vegetables to be seen more clearly. I chose to do this because pastels allow my artistic talent to be seen and because the colors reflect clarity smothered by darkness but pushing for light. I am sure that many of my classmates will agree that darkness hovered over us as the stress of senior year was underway, but as a class we never let it take over, thus enabling our true colors to shine. To me it is very symbolic of all the Class of 2002 has been through together. Putting this together required much hard work and a lot of time, but I am very happy with the finished result.
